After making a number of short films and publicity profiles for Paramount, Twentieth-Century Fox and Universal Pictures, Paul Joyce established an international reputation as a photographer in the1980s with exhibitions at The National Portrait Gallery in London, The Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, The Witkin Gallery in New York, and numerous other shows in the US and Europe. He also wrote and directed in the theatre, returning to film and TV with a BBC Play for Today and a classic four-part series of Dr Who with Tom Baker. His company name, Lucida Productions, has become synonymous with high-end arts documentaries and his films have been nominated both for International Emmy and Cable Ace awards, being shown at over 20 Festivals worldwide.
His photographic and painting work is held by: The Department of the Environment, The Arts Council of Great Britain, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Portrait Gallery London, The Tate Gallery, The Biblioteque Nationale, and The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
Paul has been building a reputation for many years in a private and essentially self-effacing way, having made a decision early on in his career that his role was to remain firmly ‘behind the camera’. However his work in film, photography and television has been increasingly acknowledged internationally and he has now reached a point where he is happy to display work, much of which has remained unseen for years. This is the case with the upcoming retrospective at Proud Chelsea of selected portraits taken over the course of more than four decades.
